55 Chevy – Teri & Michael at Dyce Marriott Hotel

Teri and Michael were our final April couple and we were thrilled to join them, their daughter Lily, and family and friends to celebrate their marriage at The Marriott, Dyce.

Teri and Michael have been together for a number of years,  having met on the bus from Yates to Amadeus on a night out! Teri tells us that it took them about 8 months to get together after numerous advances from Michael and a lot of family speculation!

We asked Teri to tell us about the proposal. The couple got engaged on 29th February 2008 which was a leap year. Teri had been threatening to propose if Michael didn’t! Michael, however, had other ideas and made Teri walk up to the top of Craigendarroch Hill in Ballater on a cold and windy day where he proposed. Teri admits it was a struggle,  but well worth it when Michael popped the question. What a lovely memory to have.

David Pattullo, a Humanist Celebrant conducted the ceremony. Teri and Michael created their own vows,  as they wanted to make the ceremony more personal and chose different vows to say to each other.

The best piece of advice received during the planning was to just enjoy every moment of the day. Teri and Michael did try,  but found that the day passes so fast, leaving them feeling slightly dazed, and that was with little alcohol they admit!

We asked what the best part of their wedding was,  and Teri says that it was the entire day and that they couldn’t pinpoint one particular thing. She thought that the ceremony was brilliant, the speeches funny and touching and that the evening was great fun. Teri loved the Chevy as their wedding car – we thought that was pretty cool too! Teri and Michael loved sharing the day with their friends and family. Teri thought that their daughter Lily looked beautiful,  and we think so too!

Teri found it difficult to choose a favourite photograph when we asked her as they are so pleased with all of them. However, she did pick out # 168 which is a black and white photograph of Teri and Michael holding hands in an archway. She also likes # 162 which is a lovely photograph of the happy couple with their bridesmaids and best men. And of course they love all of the photos of Lily.Teri tells us that she found the ceremony funny but puts that down to nerves. The fact that Michael was shaking with nerves also made her laugh! Michael and Teri are grateful to everyone who contributed to their wedding day as it was so  fabulous.
Teri and Michael have just returned from a short honeymoon in a log cabin at Beech Hedge Park near Perth and Blairgowrie. They are very much looking forward to their ‘big honeymoon’ later on in the year when they head to Orlando, Florida for 3 weeks in September. We know that they’ll have a fabulous time.

We will be meeting Teri, Michael, and Lily again quite soon, as we are booked to photograph Teri’s sister Jacqui’s wedding in June!

All of us here at Rubislaw Studio wish Michael, Teri and Lily every happiness in the future.

“Tale as Old as Time” – Alastair and Esther, King’s Community Church, and Ardoe House Hotel

Our first photo shoot with Esther and Alastair was back in July at the historical and dramatic location of Dunnottar Castle. We met there to take some photographs to celebrate their engagement. The location was very significant, as this is where Alastair and Esther went on their first date!

The couple met on the steps of the very church they were to be married in, King’s Community Church. Esther had been looking for a church to attend, having returned to Aberdeen after her university days in Edinburgh. Alastair just happened to be on the welcome team that day, and after coffee and a chat, the rest as the saying goes, is history!

Alastair’s proposal was the most romantic I had ever heard. He arranged to meet Esther at the church, and when she opened the doors she was met with the words “will you marry me” spelled out in pebbles. There were candles, as well as photographs of the couple and Esther’s favourite tune, “Tale as old as time” from Beauty and the beast, playing in the background. The couple went on to walk down the aisle to the same tune. It must have taken a great deal of love and imagination to plan all that!

We asked Esther and Alastair a few more questions.

Who conducted your ceremony? Dr Iain Duthie (Pastor of Kings Community Church, Aberdeen), and Brian Rapske (Pastor from Canada, and friend of the Bride’s family).

Did you choose your own vows? If so, what is the story behind them? We used the ones that the Bride’s parents did, which were taken from the Anglican version of the book of common prayer, and we each memorised them.

What was the best advice that you received during your wedding planning? Take moments on the wedding day to look around and let yourself enjoy and cherish the day itself.

Where did you go on honeymoon? El Medano in Tenerife after the wedding, with a Mediterranean Cruise to follow in October (since the original cruise we had booked for after the wedding was cancelled)

What was the best part of the wedding? (Apart from the photographs obviously!!) The video that was produced was fantastic in capturing so many great moments, as were the photo booth pictures in the evening. We loved the ceremony and the speeches, and the meal was fantastic too …so all in all, we can’t really pick a single best part! If I had to, I’d say Pete Hartley playing ‘Amazing Grace’ during the service at the church – it was superb! – and Esther loved the drive in ‘DOB 100’ – the old Rolls Royce that she felt was like “Brum” from the Children’s TV programme in the early 90’s!

What is your favourite photo? The black and white photo of Esther and I next to the car, and the black and white one of us together outside the church after the ceremony. We love the group photos from up at the Ardoe as well.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention? Were there any particularly funny moments? The speeches were all very unique and very memorable, and there were plenty jokes in them that still make us smile!

Fun at Pittodrie House – Fiona and Dave

We were delighted to be part of Fiona and Dave’s wedding day. They were married on Thursday 12th April 2012 at the stunning St. Machar’s Cathedral followed by a wedding reception with their guests at the beautiful Pittodrie House Hotel.

The weather was a typical Scottish day with all seasons in one day, and started badly with pouring rain as Fiona arrived at St. Machar’s! However, the April showers soon cleared, and everyone had a fabulous day and we captured some terrific images.

We asked Fiona to tell us about her special day.

The wedding proposal? It came as a big surprise to Fiona as she tells us that Dave spontaneously got down on one knee in the kitchen!!

The best part of advice that Fiona received during the wedding planning?  was to enjoy every minute of your wedding day as it will pass very quickly.

Their ceremony was conducted in St Machars Cathedral by Alison Hutchison using the standard Church of Scotland wedding vows.

Fiona’s favourite part of the wedding?  (obviously apart from the photographs), was sharing everything with family and friends. They helped make their day so special.

Fiona and Dave spent their honeymoon in Edinburgh where they had a fabulous time.

We asked Fiona to select a favourite photograph which proved a difficult task! She finally whittled it down to FD0445 at the gate of St. Machar’s Cathedral, FD0572 the picture of Fraser with his foot up on the rock, FD0603 on the lawn at Pittodrie House with Bennachie in the background, and FD0667 the wonderful picture of the back of Fiona’s dress in the doorway at Pittodrie House.

We have to agree that these images sum up the day beautifully.

Fiona was also delighted with our “Photobooth” style pictures taken in the evening,

This was the first outing of our photobooth concept, after many requests from our clients. Fiona says the pictures are hilarious, and she has had lots of positive feedback about them.

We wish Fiona and Dave every happiness in the future. Congratulations from all at Team Rubislaw!

Come Fly With Me – Emma & Callum at Thainstone House

Meet Emma and Callum who were married recently at Thainstone House.

To get to know them better, we asked a few questions about their big day:

Who conducted the ceremony? - Caron Harper from the Inverurie registrar office. She was fantastic from start to finish and pitched the ceremony just perfectly. We received so many compliments on how lovely the ceremony was.
Did you choose your own vows?  – Not really – we were give a selection from Caron and we just picked what we liked best! There isn’t really a story behind what we picked.
What was the best advice you received during planning? -  That all the planning comes together in the end! I think there is a certain point you get to with the planning (probably about 2-3 months before) where you just feel really stressed, and like your to do list is getting bigger not smaller, and that’s when that advice was really useful to me!
How did you meet?  – We both did Aeronautical Engineering at Glasgow University, although we were friends for two years before we got together!
What about the proposal? - We were in London for a weekend break in October 2010. The day started off with Callum treating me to breakfast in bed, then a champagne picnic in the park, followed by afternoon tea in a posh hotel where he proposed! Callum’s advice for any future brides to be,  is to make sure you say yes before you start crying!:)
Where did you go on Honeymoon?  – We did two nights in Miami and then eight nights in Mexico! We did all sorts, from a boat trip round Miami, to an Art Deco segwaying tour in Miami, and from swimming with dolphins, to visting the Mayan ruins in Mexico. We combined this with a few days relaxing at the beach. It was amazing and we definitely didn’t want to come back to reality after all that!
What was the best part of the wedding?  - Having such a fantastic day with all our friends and family. At the end of the night Loch Lomond was playing, and Callum and I were in the centre of a massive ring of all our guests. It was the best feeling standing beside my new husband, and looking round the room, being greeted by the smiling faces of all our friends and family. Will never forget that moment!
What is your favourite photo?  – Sorry this is a bit of a cop out, but I really can’t pick just one! I like EC_0213 because it’s the photo making everything official, but I know Callum and I both like EC_0412bw. It kind of has the look of “happily ever after” if you know what I mean?! I also really like EC_0475 and EC_0430bw! Plus EC_0235 is a really good one of all the bridal party!
Were there any funny moments? -  I’m sure there were a few but the only one that sticks out in my mind is trying to get Callum’s ring to go on his finger! I think Graham and Michaela captured it in the photos! The jewellers told us that the ring should be quite snug, so obviously it doesn’t fall off. Callum has quite big fingers, and was quite worried by this, so didn’t want to try it on properly when we picked them up in case it wouldn’t come off! Trying to get it on his finger on the day wasn’t easy, and I did think it wouldn’t go on which did cause a bit of laughter around the room! But it eventually went on and now doesn’t come off in a hurry!
What is the story behind the old photos? -  One set of my grandparents died within a short period of time of each other, about 2-2.5 years ago, and all Callum’s grandparents either died before he was born or when he was really young. I wanted to find a way to still include them within our day. I came across the idea of having their photos on display on the You and Your Wedding Forum (I will admit I became kind of addicted to this website and magazine while I was planning our wedding, and got so many useful ideas/tips from there!) and thought it was a really nice idea.  Callum did too, so we decided to go with it. A lot of people have commented that it was really different to have the table set up like that, and that they really liked it. I also had my bouquet placed on my grandparents grave after the wedding. I also thought it was nice to see how the types of photos and different styles of dresses have changed over time!
We also had a photo frame mount out on the same table which we asked all our guests to sign. That idea comes from my work. When ever someone leaves a project, we give them a photo of the aircraft they worked on with the signatures of everyone they worked with on the mount surrounding the photo, as a reminder of the time on the project. We have always liked this idea, and decided to do the same for our wedding. The idea is that we will put one of our wedding photos within the mount, and when we are older have another way (besides the guest book) of remembering everyone who was at our wedding! The only trick we missed, was that apparently the signatures should be in pencil so they don’t fade!
What about the table names? – Callum and I both work in the aviation Industry, and a number of our family members also have links to the Industry. For this reason we felt it would be expected to include that link somewhere in the wedding, but we didn’t want it to be too geeky! We were struggling to come up with table names so that fitted perfectly! Each table was named after an aircraft that had a personal link to either me or Callum or our families! We tried to make it a bit more fun by making them like top trumps cards! There are a couple of photos of these too.

11 weeks! Chris and Gail at Meldrum House

Meet Gail and Chris who were recently married at the stunning Meldrum House Hotel.

This was our first wedding of the year and we were delighted to share such a special day with a great couple and their lovely daughter Eva along with their family and friends.

Gail tells us that she met Chris through work.  The marriage proposal was done “with a sore knee and an empty wallet” according to Chris!!

We couldn’t believe that they only had 11 weeks from booking Meldrum House to the big day itself.

Gail said that they didn’t appreciate just how much had to be done in such a short space of time. Due to this incredible short timescale they really did have to trust their instincts when it came to their suppliers. Gail said that they were really happy with all of their choices and their day went without a hitch. We think that they did a fabulous job of organising everything and Gail has admitted that she’ll miss the wedding planning.
Isobel Ross, registrar from Aberdeenshire Council, conducted the ceremony. Gail and Chris chose the words for the exchanging of rings from a selection provided by Isobel. When it came to the actual wedding vows, we think that it was lovely that Gail and Chris wrote these themselves.Gail’s favourite part of the day was the ceremony itself. Their daughter created lasting memories as Gail explains, “Having our daughter Eva, almost 2, with us while we took our vows was really special. She had lots to say throughout! She added a touch of humour to the whole thing too. Our guests had a good giggle when Eva said ‘No’ very loudly at a crucial moment!:o
We imagine that people will be talking about that for a while!!It sounds as though everyone had a fabulous day celebrating Gail and Chris’ wedding. A bouncy castle had been arranged for the children’s amusement – however they did not get a look in as the adults took it over!

We asked our couple to choose a favourite photograph. Gail replied that she just couldn’t choose, and picks another one every time she looks. Finally she decided on CG-0372 with Eva resting her head on her knee, which we agree is a lovely moment.

For their honeymoon Gail told us that they had a few blissful days at the Fairmont in St. Andrews.
