Meet Emma and Callum who were married recently at Thainstone House.
To get to know them better, we asked a few questions about their big day:
Who conducted the ceremony? - Caron Harper from the Inverurie registrar office. She was fantastic from start to finish and pitched the ceremony just perfectly. We received so many compliments on how lovely the ceremony was.
Did you choose your own vows? – Not really – we were give a selection from Caron and we just picked what we liked best! There isn’t really a story behind what we picked.
What was the best advice you received during planning? - That all the planning comes together in the end! I think there is a certain point you get to with the planning (probably about 2-3 months before) where you just feel really stressed, and like your to do list is getting bigger not smaller, and that’s when that advice was really useful to me!
How did you meet? – We both did Aeronautical Engineering at Glasgow University, although we were friends for two years before we got together!
What about the proposal? - We were in London for a weekend break in October 2010. The day started off with Callum treating me to breakfast in bed, then a champagne picnic in the park, followed by afternoon tea in a posh hotel where he proposed! Callum’s advice for any future brides to be, is to make sure you say yes before you start crying!

Where did you go on Honeymoon? – We did two nights in Miami and then eight nights in Mexico! We did all sorts, from a boat trip round Miami, to an Art Deco segwaying tour in Miami, and from swimming with dolphins, to visting the Mayan ruins in Mexico. We combined this with a few days relaxing at the beach. It was amazing and we definitely didn’t want to come back to reality after all that!
What was the best part of the wedding? - Having such a fantastic day with all our friends and family. At the end of the night Loch Lomond was playing, and Callum and I were in the centre of a massive ring of all our guests. It was the best feeling standing beside my new husband, and looking round the room, being greeted by the smiling faces of all our friends and family. Will never forget that moment!
What is your favourite photo? – Sorry this is a bit of a cop out, but I really can’t pick just one! I like EC_0213 because it’s the photo making everything official, but I know Callum and I both like EC_0412bw. It kind of has the look of “happily ever after” if you know what I mean?! I also really like EC_0475 and EC_0430bw! Plus EC_0235 is a really good one of all the bridal party!
Were there any funny moments? - I’m sure there were a few but the only one that sticks out in my mind is trying to get Callum’s ring to go on his finger! I think Graham and Michaela captured it in the photos! The jewellers told us that the ring should be quite snug, so obviously it doesn’t fall off. Callum has quite big fingers, and was quite worried by this, so didn’t want to try it on properly when we picked them up in case it wouldn’t come off! Trying to get it on his finger on the day wasn’t easy, and I did think it wouldn’t go on which did cause a bit of laughter around the room! But it eventually went on and now doesn’t come off in a hurry!
What is the story behind the old photos? - One set of my grandparents died within a short period of time of each other, about 2-2.5 years ago, and all Callum’s grandparents either died before he was born or when he was really young. I wanted to find a way to still include them within our day. I came across the idea of having their photos on display on the You and Your Wedding Forum (I will admit I became kind of addicted to this website and magazine while I was planning our wedding, and got so many useful ideas/tips from there!) and thought it was a really nice idea. Callum did too, so we decided to go with it. A lot of people have commented that it was really different to have the table set up like that, and that they really liked it. I also had my bouquet placed on my grandparents grave after the wedding. I also thought it was nice to see how the types of photos and different styles of dresses have changed over time!
We also had a photo frame mount out on the same table which we asked all our guests to sign. That idea comes from my work. When ever someone leaves a project, we give them a photo of the aircraft they worked on with the signatures of everyone they worked with on the mount surrounding the photo, as a reminder of the time on the project. We have always liked this idea, and decided to do the same for our wedding. The idea is that we will put one of our wedding photos within the mount, and when we are older have another way (besides the guest book) of remembering everyone who was at our wedding! The only trick we missed, was that apparently the signatures should be in pencil so they don’t fade!
What about the table names? – Callum and I both work in the aviation Industry, and a number of our family members also have links to the Industry. For this reason we felt it would be expected to include that link somewhere in the wedding, but we didn’t want it to be too geeky! We were struggling to come up with table names so that fitted perfectly! Each table was named after an aircraft that had a personal link to either me or Callum or our families! We tried to make it a bit more fun by making them like top trumps cards! There are a couple of photos of these too.
