Choosing Your Wedding Photographer

As a photographer myself, I can only imagine how difficult it is to choose your photographer.

I thought I would put together some explanation of the different types of photographer, which will hopefully help you choose the right one for you.

1. The Traditional Photographer
The traditional wedding photographer will make sure that the “important” moments are captured e.g. first kiss, signing the register, cutting the cake, formal groups, etc. The photographs tend to be smiley, and looking at the camera. Not many photographers fall into this category these days, but there are a few old timers left.
• They are often reasonably priced.
• They cover the “essentials”.
• Pictures can be a bit samey, not much creativity.

2. Documentary/Reportage/Photojournalist/ “Non Invasive” Photographer
A popular approach these days, especially with inexperienced photographers who have little training in wedding photography, and posing the bride and groom.

These guys will mingle with the wedding party to capture unique raw moments. They usually attend with as little equipment as possible, allowing them to move around easily. A documentary photographer is less likely to use any flash, and will often produce the results in black and white, with a ‘gritty’ look (eg showing every wrinkle). These photographers will learn to be stealthy and have an intuition for things that are about to happen.
Documentary photographers are not for everybody, because they really do document the day as it is. No filters, no posing, it’s all about real moments.
• No interruption to the flow of the day.
• No posing, fixing dress, etc.
• No groups.
• No lighting equipment, which can be an issue in a poorly lit venue.

3. The Fine Art / Contemporary Photographer

We would class ourselves as a Contemporary/ Fine Art wedding photographer. Our aim is to shoot wonderful images at your wedding to create a wedding album that is beautiful and artistic. This means that we will guide you through the various stages of your wedding day, will pose you for your photographs, and will use extra lighting when required to add some extra wow to your images.

This of course does not mean that we will not be capturing relaxed unposed moments at the same time.
Working with my second photographer, we will produce a wonderful mixture of both.

With over twenty years of experience in wedding photography we have learned what works best. For example, posing the bride and groom actually makes them appear more natural. We can also make them appear slimmer or taller. The wedding dress receives special attention, and is always perfectly placed when we set up your photographs.

We believe a wedding day is the perfect time for beautiful retouched portraits.

And of course a great time for the guys to get together for a photoshoot too.

If you would like to chat some more about your wedding photography, and browse our beautiful wedding albums, just get in touch to arrange a time when we can sit down together. Simply post a comment below to contact us, and we will get right back to you.

All the best,
Graham and Jill
